The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was set to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
